The government says more than two crore tax returns have been filed on the new portal

Just a day after Infosys CEO Salil Parekh said the e-filing portal for tax returns was making “steady progress” and taxpayer concerns were being addressed, the government said on Thursday that more two crores of income tax returns (ITRs) have been filed through it to date and the platform has “substantially stabilized”.

Urging taxpayers to file their returns for fiscal year 2020-21 at the earliest, the latest date of which is Dec.31, 2021, the income tax department said in a statement that more than 1.70 crore returns had been filed. electronically verified and among these. , 1.49 crore was made through the Aadhaar-based One-Time Password (OTP) system.

The electronic verification process through Aadhaar OTP and other methods is important for the department to begin processing the RTI and issue refunds, if applicable.

Of the verified ITRs 1 and 4, over 1.06 ITR crore were processed and over 36.22 lakh refunds for YY 2021-22 were issued. Processing of RTIs 2 and 3 will be resumed shortly, the ministry said.

The new e-filing portal was launched on June 7 this year, and soon after, users started complaining about issues, which led the Ministry of Finance to summon officials from Infosys (the company has designed the portal) and ask it to solve the problems.

As a result of these problems, the government has had to extend the filing deadline on two occasions.

However, as issues persisted with the platform, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman called Mr. Parekh and gave the company until September 15 to address taxpayer concerns.

While nothing was heard on the matter after that, during Infosys’ second quarter financial results statement, Mr Parekh said on October 13 that the portal was making “steady progress” and that all concerns were “gradually processed”.

However, he gave no indication as to when the technical issues will be fully resolved.
